Watched The Road.
A masterpiece. This internationally-acclaimed psychological Filipino horror film is a real charmer, both story-wise and production-wise. The cinematography, scoring and visual FX are meticulously and brilliantly crafted by director Yam Laranas, which I could consider one of the strengths of the film. The creepy combination of light, color and focus is what sets it apart from most local horror films in the history. It magnifies the terror and emotions the characters are feeling. In addition to that, the scoring, which is occasionally muted, is excruciating like that Korean thriller film, A Tale of Two Sisters. Every time the scenes land silent, I can feel my heart beating faster.
The plot is slow-paced and it adds to the tension. It is told in reverse and is divided into three parts named by year, “2008”, “1998” and “1988” Although few were predictable, the movie lets you think. Well, it might be safe to say that the cinematography and FX are creepy but judging by the story itself, it is creepier. According to an international critic, as also shown in the trailer, “it gets under your skin and stays there.” True enough. And as for me, it is also quite disturbing in a way. I love it and everything just sends shiver down my spine. The cast? Perfection! Each one played their role very well especially the main leads, actually, all of them.
The Road is a must-see Filipino film of the year, one thing that Filipinos must be proud of. The film has been receiving nods from international critics and I wish they bag awards from different international award-giving bodies. They deserve your eyes, moviegoers and avid fans of horror films. Two thumbs up!
