Long and lasting.
This is the speech I gave last night at my best friend’s debut. The response of the crowd after I finished it was really overwhelming. I was really touched when some of our friends even complimented me for being such a great friend, for being so supportive and all. Aaagh, so touched! :> So here you go…
It is a great pleasure to be standing here in front of all of you to give a speech to the lady of the night. But before anything else, allow me to read you a poem of Nicholas Gordon about friendship.
May our friendship last forever; May I sail upon your sea. May we go through life together; May there always be a “we.” May I be your endless sky; May you breathe my gentle air. May you never wonder why Each time you look for me, I’m there. May we be for each a smile Like the warm, life- giving sun; Yet when we’re in pain awhile, May our suffering be one. May we share our special days, The happiness of one for two; And if we must go separate ways, Let my love remain with you.
Almost a decade ago, we used to ignore each other. Who could have thought that this day would come? Me, giving a toast as she reach another milestone in her life. We were once kids, who used to play and make each other laugh like there’s no tomorrow. We’re partners in crime and be the hero we can possibly be for each other. We’re the best of friends and no one can ever separate us. From 3rd grade until now, I guess it’s already safe to say that we have shared lots of moments together that only death can wipe away and I won’t let that happen unless we have reached the time of our lives.
Imagining a future of me wouldn’t be complete without an Aira Esplanada in it. She could make a great auntie or ninang to my future kids, teach them how to write and sing and impart to them good values as they grow up. 50 years from now, as the skin on our cheeks and around our eyes begin to wrinkle, our friendship will remain the same, robust and sturdy.
I wish you all the happiness in life, prosperity and success. You are blessed and talented and I’m sure opportunities will come chase you down. They will open and I believe one day, people will look up to you as their source of inspiration. I wish you all the best. I love you, Aira and happy 18th birthday!
