Watched A Clockwork Orange
Violence, or should I say, ultra-violence, has never been this rare and disturbing.
Alexander DeLarge eats and breathes violence along with the terrific music of Ludwig Van Beethoven. He and his three droogs, a term he uses to refer to his small gang, sit in the Korova Milk Bar to hype themselves up before embarking to another night of the ultra-violence. They brawl with other gangs, knock off drunk men and rape women. DeLarge, as a leader, is manipulative and the most merciless among the group. Tired of his manipulative ways, the other three devised a trap putting DeLarge to jail. There, he learned about the Ludovico technique or the aversion therapy where the patient experiences nausea when experiencing violence. He volunteered as he was lured by the pretty good consequences it could make and soon find himself a dreadful victim of the government’s devious ways to eliminate crimes in the society. An unexpected twist wraps this up to one disturbingly satirical, influential film of the 70’s.
Stanley Kubrick ironically puts pulchritude in violence through this dystopian movie which is based on the novel by Anthony Burgess. It is very rare and surprisingly, it plays a social significance in our society today. Other viewers wouldn’t dare to see this and might not recognize its worth since it is oddly different from many films that fabricate the generation. It conveys a dark message and it demands a great deal of comprehension and certainly, attracts the judging and critical eyes of the people. Well, it is definitely a big hit that took the people by storm.
Malcolm McDowell is such a great actor of his generation and even until now. I’ve watched him as Daniel Linderman in Heroes and I was really so surprised with how he looked before. Anyway, he is a perfect fit for the role of Alexander DeLarge. He is really, really great.
It is one of the most thought-provoking films ever made. Unusual yet brilliant and unforgettably dark, A Clockwork Orange is very recommendable. But ready not only your head, but also your stomach. You just might have been a patient of the Ludovico technique and you might really find yourself experiencing nausea. So, watch out.
My rating: 4.5/5
